Behavioural Counselling

Assisting pet owners in tackling the underlying causes of their dog's behavioural problems.

Are you experiencing some difficulties with behaviour problems? At Annex Animal Hospital, we recommend force-free, positive reinforcement, and counter-conditioning training techniques. It is always best to address behaviour concerns sooner than later in order to prevent reinforcing the issue or escalating the problem. Call us if you need assistance or a recommendation for puppy classes or basic training classes. For more serious behaviour problems, we will ask you to book a consultation with the doctor. If deemed necessary, we can arrange for a referral to an accredited behavioural counsellor.

How can behavioural counselling help my dog’s behaviour?

So many dogs are surrendered to shelters every year for behaviour problems that could be avoided with some basic training and proper handling technique. A professional trainer can show you how to communicate and reinforce the wanted behaviours in your dog. By following the techniques recommended by a counsellor, your dog will improve over time. It takes time, practice and perseverance but it is well worth the effort when the end result is a well-mannered, safe canine family member.

What happens at the initial dog counselling meeting?

If you are referred to a behaviour counsellor, they will contact you for some details prior to your appointment. Sometimes videos are useful to them when assessing the behaviour issue.

Will my pet insurance policy cover the cost of dog behaviour counselling?

Please refer to your individual policy or call your insurance company to check on coverage for behaviour counselling.

What can I expect after the consultation?

After your consultation, you will be given instructions on how to change your dog’s behaviour over time. There will be some follow-up appointments to measure your dog’s response and to adjust your training protocols as needed. It takes time and effort, but it is well worth it when the end result is a calmer, well behaved canine citizen.
